Meet the Carters…

Born and bred in Oakland, CA, KC's early life, guided by his mother and sister in the absence of his father, forged in him a unique perspective and a strong sense of purpose. Following his graduation from High School, KC dedicated himself to serving his country through five years in the Army and an additional four years in the Air Force. His commitment to making a difference then led him to a career in law enforcement, culminating in his recent retirement as a Police Officer. Notably, KC's time with the Oakland Police Department fulfilled a long-held dream: to be a visible example for young Black boys in his hometown, showing them firsthand that they too can achieve their aspirations.

Born and raised in Oakland, CA, Erin's journey began as the middle child in a family of three girls, supported by her loving mother and father. Her academic pursuits led her to California State University, East Bay, where she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Communications, complemented by minors in Journalism and Marketing. Erin's early career involved exploring various avenues, ultimately leading her to the realization that her true calling lay in creating her own opportunities. Her connection with KC, sparked while she worked as a 911 Dispatcher for the Oakland Police Department, ignited her entrepreneurial spirit. Now, as a successful Business Communications Strategist, Erin is passionate about helping fellow business owners unlock their potential and grow. Above all, she cherishes the opportunity to be a strong and inspiring role model for her daughters, Kaelynn and Savannah.

Our Story

Our life together, as Erin and KC, has been a true testament to resilience and the incredible power of our partnership. Right from the moment we said "I do," we faced challenges that really tested the foundation of our relationship. Our journey to becoming parents wasn't the traditional route; navigating the complexities of infertility and ultimately embracing the beautiful path of adoption through foster care was a profound and life-changing experience for us.

But those trials didn't end there. We navigated the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Erin's father, followed just two short years later by the equally devastating loss of KC's mother. These losses left a huge void in our lives and deeply impacted our daughters, who dearly loved their grandparents. The unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic brought its own unique set of struggles for our family, and then KC faced an injury that further complicated things for us.

Seeking a fresh start and a change of pace, we made the big move to Las Vegas. While it offered the promise of new beginnings, it also brought its own set of stressors as we navigated building a new life from the ground up, far away from the comfort and support of our family. Just as we started to find our footing here, Erin faced a critical health battle, a fight that, thankfully, she won.

Through all of these intense experiences, we've come to a fundamental truth: life isn't always picture-perfect. Behind the smiles and the everyday routines, we're all navigating our own "beautiful struggles," our own messy and sometimes chaotic realities. What has sustained us, what has been our constant anchor, is our unwavering support for each other. It's this understanding, this shared human experience, that truly fuels This Beautiful Struggle podcast. We want to empower you, our listeners, to embrace your own unique journeys, to find strength in your vulnerabilities, and to hold onto hope, knowing that even in the midst of the mess, there is always the potential for victory on the other side.

A Letter to Kaelynn & Savannah

Our Dearest Kaelynn and Savannah,

We just wanted to take a moment to tell you both how incredibly blessed we feel that you chose us to be your parents. There were times when we felt a deep sense of hopelessness, wondering if we would ever know the immeasurable joy of being Mom and Dad. You both came into our lives and filled a void created by the many losses we experienced during our journey with infertility.

Neither of you deserved the hand you were initially dealt. Kaelynn, bouncing from house to house in foster care, and Savannah, you too deserved unwavering love from the very beginning. While you may not have always felt that security and love in your early years, please know with all our hearts that you will never have to worry about not feeling it again.

We love you both more than words can say, and we are so incredibly proud to be your Mom and Dad. There isn't anything in this world that we wouldn't do for you. You are our everything.

With all our love,

Mom and Dad
